For over thirty years, the Rural Coalition has served as a critical advocacy voice for African-Americans, American-Indian, Asian-American, Euro-American, Latino and women farmers and ranchers, farmworkers, and rural communities in the United States as well as campesino and indigenous communities in Mexico. Although our unified efforts have produced many victories over the years, our shared work is even more critical now as we prepare for the upcoming 2012 Farm Bill.
We invite all of our members and allies to join us for our CBO Small Farm and Food Outlook Forum that will be held on December 1-2, including our networking dinner and 5th Annual Holiday Gala, on December 1st at the National Press Club. We will continue our focus on our goal of assuring that the diverse producers, farmworkers and communities we serve are able to secure their “seat at the table” in Agriculture.
Our forum will include several important focus areas:
- Tracking and Evaluating Outreach Results and Engagement of Socially Disadvantaged Producers and Farmworkers in USDA Programs: How do we measure what we are doing and the impact it is having in our communities? How do we work with USDA in evaluating results?
- Building Our Markets, Businesses and Communities: How do we expand the capacity of our members to build sustainable markets and communities and to provide nutritious, tasty and culturally interesting food to everyone.
- Commodities, Conservation and Crop Insurance: What is the forecast for the rural and farm economy and the budget and what changes are likely to be necessary, possible or beneficial. How are these programs working for our sectors of agriculture and how could we make them work better?
- New Small Farm Program/Farm Bill Outlook Priorities: What have we achieved together and what will we need to protect as budgets tighten in order to assure socially disadvantaged producers and farmworkers are met in future years.
- Lunchtime Program: From Farm to School: How the DC initiative is working and what is happening in other places.
